Rhodes Alumnus Receives Jefferson Award for Outstanding Voluntarism

Dr. William Coley Jr., a Rhodes alumnus and retired dentist, is one of the 10 winners of this year’s Mid-South Jefferson Awards for outstanding voluntarism. The awards are sponsored by The Commercial Appeal, and winners will be considered for the national Jefferson Award recognition to be presented in Washington, D.C. in June 2011.
Coley served on the Church Health Center’s board of directors for six years as chairman of the Memphis Dental Society Outreach Committee, which led to the center setting up a dental operatory.
He also has served on the Global Missions Committee of Idlewild Presbyterian Church and has helped with several international efforts planning and carrying out medical mission trips to Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico; serving patients at Hospital St. Croix in Leogone, Haiti; and orchestrating the establishment of a dental operatory in Aqua Prieta, Mexico.
A 1950 graduate of Rhodes, Coley was named Distinguished Alumnus of the Year by the college in 2010.
