Publication Date: 7/21/2010

J. Carey Thompson, Vice President for Enrollment and Communications and Dean of Admissions (Memphis, Tenn.)--Rhodes College has announced the appointment of J. Carey Thompson as Vice President for Enrollment and Communications and Dean of Admissions. Effective August 16, 2010, Thompson will lead the college′s newly-formed Division of Enrollment and Communications comprising the offices of admissions, communications, and financial aid.

Thompson comes to Rhodes from Centre College in Danville, Ky., where he is Vice President of Enrollment and Student Planning Services/Dean of Admission and Student Financial Planning.

“Carey brings exceptional ability to Rhodes with over 28 years of experience in the profession. He has served in a similar capacity at Centre College for the past 12 years following 16 years of progressively responsible experience at Furman University,” says Rhodes President William E. Troutt. “His record of achievement throughout his career is enviable and we are so fortunate to have secured his appointment.”

Chemistry professor David Jeter, who chairs the faculty Admissions Policy Committee, says, “Carey’s experience seems ideal for us, and he should be able to keep us moving forward without a hitch. He seemed comfortable with the idea of the faculty as partner in attracting the best students to the college and open to helping develop more appropriate, and effective, ways to use faculty expertise.”

Thompson holds a master of education degree in institutional advancement from Vanderbilt University and a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Furman University. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Common Application and the Southern Regional College Board Council.

Thompson’s appointment comes after Dave Wottle, who after 35 years as a chief admissions officer and 27 very successful years at Rhodes, stepped down as Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid to serve as Special Assistant to the President of Rhodes. In this capacity he will engage in a number of special projects to augment Rhodes’ student recruitment initiatives.
