Background Guide

Nick Mastron, Chair

Hello everyone! My name’s Nick Mastron, and I will be your Chair for SOCHUM! I am a native Memphian and am currently in my final year at the University of Memphis, where I will be graduating in May with degrees in Political Science, Economics, International Studies, and History, with minors in Spanish and Legal Thought/Liberal Arts. I have been involved with Model UN for seven years now, and I have attended conferences around the country. I am the chief executive officer of the University of Memphis Model UN program. This is my second consecutive MSMUN conference that I have helped coordinate, and my first time chairing at MSMUN, so I am very excited to be here!

My research in college has focused on violence against women, security, international relations theory, American political theory and institutionalization, American foreign relations, the United Nations in conflict resolution, international law, Middle Eastern politics, international human rights, economic theory, ecological economics, public economics, the global political economy, the formation of statehood and national identity, as well as many other fields. I have produced several papers, held multiple presentations, and worked for non-profit organizations dealing these issues. I have also travelled to London and Berlin twice to study and conduct research. I will be graduating with honors and three theses in spring. Upon graduation I will either pursue a Ph.D. program in Public Policy or a J.D./L.L.M. program in International Human and Civil Rights.

A little more personally, I am a devout New York Yankees fan and strongly believe that baseball represents the second global sport, only behind soccer. My favorite soccer team is Zenit St. Petersburg. I love to play the guitar, and my favorite band is The Who. I love to read, and my favorite books are 1984, the Harry Potter Series, Catcher in the Rye, the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Poisonwood Bible, The Kite Runner, Crime and Punishment.
