Novikoff Publishes Article in Prestigious Journal, Speculum

Professor Alex Novikoff has just published an article entitled “Anselm, Dialogue, and the Rise of Scholastic Disputation” in the April issue of the journal Speculum, the journal of the Medieval Academy of America and the lead journal in the field of medieval studies. The article considers St. Anselm’s dialogical writings in relation to the origins of scholastic disputation, a quintessential form of medieval learning that centers around the idea of formalized debate, and argues that the origins of this twelfth-century “scholastic” practice is in fact to be found in the eleventh-century monastic community of Bec in Normandy, and specifically in the writings of Anselm and his students.
