Lizzie Steen to go to New York as Gilder Lehrman History Scholar
Lizzie Steen ’12 has been selected as a 2011 Gilder Lehrman Scholar. She will spend a week in New York City in late June studying American history through the Gilder Lehrman Institute. This year’s program received more than 250 applications from 179 different institutions across the country, and Lizzie’s selection as one of thirty fellows is a point of pride for the Department of History.
This year’s Gilder Lehrman Program will focus on “The Outbreak of the Civil War,” and will feature lectures by eminent historians Eric Foner, Stephanie McCurry, and Steven Hahn. In addition to lectures, Gilder Lehrman Scholars will see archival treasures at places like the New York Public Library and will take field trips to sites around New York City that relate to the Civil War, including Five Points and Cooper Union.
