Communications Service Manual (pdf)
Should materials bearing the old logo be destroyed?
No, the new logo will be phased in as supplies are depleted.
How do I order supplies that carry the new logo?
Ordering procedures will not change. For materials handled by Corporate Express, simply continue to use their Supply Requisition form. If you need to have brochures or other materials reprinted, contact the Communications Office.
What about other items, such as vehicles, uniforms and signage?
Those, too, will be updated when current supplies are replaced.
On what types of publications should the Rhodes logo appear?
The Rhodes logo should appear on all printed and electronic media produced by any department of the college, and when the logo is used in an electronic publication it should always link to the Rhodes homepage (http://www.rhodes.edu/). Ideally, the logo should be positioned as a “closing mark” or as part of a signature (with contact information). It is important to think of the logo as an identifying mark, not a design element.
What should departments tell their suppliers about use of the logo?
The Communications Office will make electronic files of the logo available to vendors and will supply them with design guidelines (pdf).
Does the logo always have to be red and black?
Whenever possible, the Rhodes colors should be used. For complete information on logo usage, see the design guidelines (pdf).
What latitude do designers have to “jazz up” the logo?
None, since it is the official mark of Rhodes College rather than a design element. Specifically, the logo may not be commingled with other marks and may not be adorned with boxes, bars, rules or other embellishments. It should not be screened. There should be no overlay of type over the logo. It should not be screened or altered (except to scale) by shape or proportion.
What is the name of the font used to spell out Rhodes College?
The font is unique to the Rhodes logo and cannot be duplicated by any standard font. To avoid confusion, please avoid other Gothic fonts.
When using letterhead with the new logo, is there a particular font I should choose to complement it?
The designers recommend Garamond. Either 11 or 12 point type works well.
Why does the logo look different on the Web site?
A special horizontal configuration was designed for electronic publications only. Departments wanting to use this version should contact the Communications Office.
Is it still acceptable to refer to the college as “Rhodes” or should one always say and write “Rhodes College”?
Only with the official logo is it necessary to use the complete legal name of the college, in the prescribed gothic type with the shield. For all other usages, “Rhodes” and “Rhodes College” are equally acceptable.
