The practice of decentralized and uncoordinated responsibility for the wording of hiring ads for faculty and staff could lead to a wide variety of descriptions of the College and its needs and could lead to a wide variety of perceptions and expectations. Potential litigation growing out of such confusion would likely be aimed at top administrators, the Board, and the College, not at particular departments. In order for the administration to exercise its appropriate responsibility and accountability in the area of faculty and staff hiring, the Board expects the administration to be actively involved and responsible for the employment and selection process, including ads placed by the College for open positions. To advertise open positions, contact the Human Resources Office.
To develop a broad and diverse applicant pool, most vacancies are advertised simultaneously on the campus and outside the College. Human Resources will work with the hiring department to determine the appropriate scope of the search. This includes the development and placement of advertisements, as well as listing openings with outreach agencies. Positions may be advertised on the College web site, HigherEdJobs.Com, Inside Higher Ed and other websites, list serves, and in local newspapers. Positions are also listed on the Human Resource job information line, (901) 843-3759. Depending upon the position, advertisements may also be placed in regional, national, and/or specific professional publications. It may also be appropriate to expand the search to include professional organizations and networks of special interest that contribute to a diverse candidate pool. Advertisements will include a summary of the position′s responsibilities and the minimum education and experience requirements and due to cost effectiveness may be briefer than the job posting. Diversity of our staff is a high priority of the College.
