Alcohol and Social Event Policy for Faculty and Staff
The following policy has been established in an effort to promote a balance between the interests of the individual and those of the Rhodes community, and to encourage responsible decisions about alcohol. This policy recognizes and is guided by the following principles:
All members of the Rhodes community are responsible for their choices and behavior regarding alcohol. We are committed to the ongoing development of a livable community, aware, at the same time, that we must respond to a world not of our making. As such, one’s presence at Rhodes does not provide immunity from the laws and standards of behavior of the larger community. Within this community, the College will take all reasonable steps to insure that no illegal or excessive consumption of alcohol occurs on its property or at its institutionally-sponsored activities.
Violations by Employees of College Alcohol Policy.
All Rhodes College employees are responsible for compliance with the College Alcohol Policy. The following employee regulations represent the College’s policy concerning alcohol:
- While at work, all employees are prohibited from being under the influence of alcohol to the point where, in the opinion of the College, judgment or performance is impaired.
- Employees who exhibit chronic erratic or unusual behavior, incur excessive absences or incidents of tardiness, are involved in a work-related accident, or otherwise give the College reasonable cause to believe they are under the influence of alcohol will be subject to drug and alcohol testing and possible disciplinary action as stated in the College Handbook, “Employee Discipline and Termination.”
Employee Responsibility for College Alcohol Policy Enforcement
Employees who organize or sponsor a student group involved in an institutionally sponsored activity of the College, whether on or off campus, have the responsibility to take all reasonable measures to enforce the College’s Alcohol Policy. Reasonable measures would include (but not limited to): required use of identification when alcohol is allowed, monitors utilized, etc.
Enforcement will consist of the following. First, students will agree in writing that they “understand that this is a College-funded event, that the College’s Alcohol Policy applies, and that they will be reported for violations.” At that point, students of legal age intending to drink would be expected to wear the official wrist bands already issued by the College. If the employee observes students without wrist bands openly drinking alcohol and/or clearly under the influence of alcohol, those students will be reported to the Dean of Student Affairs.
Failure to comply with these responsibilities will be considered a violation of the Alcohol Policy and violators will be subject to disciplinary action suited to the severity of the violation as stated in the section entitled “Employee Discipline and Termination.”
