The competitive James C. Gaither Junior Fellows Program accepts applications only through participating universities. Seniors Meredith Clement and Emily Rose Mitchell have been selected as Rhodes’ nominees.
The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace offers approximately 12-14 one-year fellowships to uniquely qualified graduating seniors and individuals who have graduated during the past academic year. Fellows have the opportunity to conduct research for books; co-author journal articles and policy papers; participate in meetings with high-level officials; contribute to congressional testimony; and organize briefings attended by scholars, journalists, and government officials.
Clement is a senior international studies and political science major from Slidell, LA. “Each of the Gaither Junior Fellow positions with the Carnegie endowment focuses on a different research area,” she says. “As a Russian studies minor who has studied abroad in both Russia and Central Asia, I am pursuing the junior fellowship with the Russian and Eurasian studies program. My time abroad has fostered a deep interest and passion for Russian studies, and I am hoping my experiences on the Rhodes Cuban-Russian Connection Maymester and on my independent studies in Kyrgyzstan will help me stand out for this fellowship.”
Clement also has served as the captain for the Rhodes A mock trial team and earned multiple individual awards including the all-American witness award presented at the 2017 national championship. She aspires to work for an international think tank or with the U.S. State Department.
A political economy major from Mobile, AL, Mitchell is a service scholar through the Bonner Program at Rhodes and has served as a Kinney Program coordinator for mentoring and education. “My semester in Hyderabad, India, started me on the trade policy path. After a year of research in Washington, D.C., I hope to pursue a master’s degree in political economy and eventually go on to research the intersection of industrialized agriculture and trade policy.”
Finalists for the James C. Gaither Junior Fellows Program will receive notifications in March 2018.
