Rhodes alumna Roberta Moore has published a revised version of her environmental science senior seminar paper in the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Pollution. The subject of the paper is the importance of toxicity in determining the impact of hazardous air pollutants on the respiratory health of children in Tennessee. Highlights include:
- High total HAP emissions does not necessarily mean high toxicity emissions.
- Acute bronchitis is more related to total emissions than toxicity.
- Most respiratory illness discharges are associated with asthma.
- Toxicity is significantly more related to asthma than total emissions.
- Poverty is more closely associated with respiratory illness than is race.
