Dr. Etty Terem of the Department of History has been invited by the Hillary Rodham Clinton Center for Women’s Empowerment at Al-Akhawayn University to be a scholar-in-residence for two weeks in April 2016.
Located in Ifrane, Morocco, the center aims to be at the forefront of gender studies scholarship in Morocco and promotes gender research and study throughout North Africa.
A historian of the Modern Middle East and North Africa, Terem will present her new research that examines the reform project of Muhammad al-Hajwi (1874-1956), a prominent Moroccan thinker and an avid reformer who was an exponent of a liberal, cosmopolitan attitude that informed his approach to social transformation. In particular, she aims at providing detailed analysis of al-Hajwi’s arguments in favor of women’s education and empowerment and his ideas on the headscarf.
