Here at Rhodes College, we have a proud history of giving back to the community, having been listed as Newsweek’s “Most Service-Minded School” two years running. And while much of that is brought about by our generous student body, our location in the heart of Memphis gives students plenty of opportunities to give back to the community. To show just how many opportunities there are close to campus, here are five places to volunteer within walking distance.
The Memphis Zoo
The Memphis Zoo is conveniently located across the street from Rhodes in Overton Park and has a wide range of areas to volunteer, no matter your interest. For those who love animals, volunteers can work with various zoo residents including penguins or giraffes (volunteers are not allowed to work with large predators). Even if working with animals doesn’t pique your interest, the zoo offers volunteer programs to work with children on field trips and even act as Santa Claus for a day.
The Brooks Museum
Also located in Overton Park, the Brooks Museum is one of the largest art museums in the South. The museum allows volunteers to help with events for children and other special events, work in administrative departments, or even give tours. The Brooks also offers internships for Rhodes students with their museum staff.
Snowden School
Snowden School is a public elementary and middle school just a block from campus. The Snowden PTA is constantly looking for new volunteers to help out with school functions, such as registration and student plays. The PTA also runs an Adopt-a-Friend program that students in need of guidance can use to find a mentor.
Urban Farms Memphis
Urban Farms Memphis is a three-acre community farm and market that provides fresh produce to a historically underserved part of Memphis. Volunteers can assist in a wide range of functions, from helping out on the farm to assisting with various community events that take place at the marketplace.
Rhodes Kinney Program
And if none of these opportunities interest you, then the Kinney Community Service Program here on campus surely can find something of interest. Located right above the bookstore, the Kinney Program has been helping students give back for over fifty years and is affiliated with over 100 service organizations in Memphis. For those wishing to volunteer but have no idea where to start, the Kinney program is the place to go.
