During this prom season, members of the J.K. Lewis Senior Center will get to dress up and dance to their hearts’ content on the Rhodes College campus. The college’s sophomore class council is presenting a Senior Citizen Prom on April 7 from 6:30 to 8:30 in the Bryan Campus Life Center Ballroom.
The J.K. Lewis Senior Center is located two miles from Rhodes, which makes it convenient for the prom goers to come to campus and enjoy an evening of fun and entertainment including refreshments and the crowning of the prom king and queen. “There will be a variety of music played,” says Rahul Peravali ’17, one of the prom’s organizers. “The Rhodes Jazz Band will perform, the Flying V’s will play rock music, and the D.J. will play more classical/dance-oriented music.”
Peravali says he borrowed the idea from the Senior Citizen Prom that was held when he was a student at Houston High School in Germantown, TN. This is the second year for the Rhodes prom. “A couple of council members and I personally went to the senior citizen center and talked to the entertainment coordinator about the event. They were very excited about the one we had last year, and so we did the same thing this year.”
To connect the different generations, all Rhodes students are invited to the free event and are encouraged to wear formal attire. In addition, one Rhodes student will perform a jump rope routine, and the Rhodes a capella groups have been asked to perform.
