Rhodes Faculty Contribute to New Grove Dictionary of American Music

There is a new edition of The Grove Dictionary of American Music (Oxford University Press, 2013), which was first published in 1986. Rhodes music faculty John Bass and Mona Krietner are among authors who contributed to the new eight-volume set which the editors calls “the largest, most comprehensive reference publication on American music.”

Articles range from definitions of musical terms to biographies to longer examinations of subjects such as the American history of the orchestra, musical instruments, and music education in the United States.

Bass has contributed articles on jazz musicians Sam Rivers, Stuff Smith, Ed Blackwell, Billy Higgins, Charlie Hunter, and Joe Beck. The careers of U.S. Marine Band directors William Henry Santelmann and (his son) William F. H Santelmann are the subjects of Kreitner’s entries.
