Guest Lecturer Argues the Value of a Liberal Arts Education in Book

The value of a liberal arts education has been a hot topic recently and critics of higher education have attacked its irrelevance and elitism, often calling for more vocational instruction. However, Wesleyan University President Michael S. Roth argues for the necessity of a liberal arts education in his book Beyond the University: Why Liberal Education Matters (Yale University Press, 2014).

A recent review of the book appears in the Oct. 19 issue of The Commercial Appeal and on the Chapter16.org website. View it here.

Roth will speak in the McCallum Ballroom on campus Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public.
