Everyone knows about Beale Street, and how couldn’t you? It’s hard to miss the never-ending row of neon signs stretching from B.B.King’s to the Hard Rock Café to Silky O’Sullivan’s, lighting up Downtown. While Beale Street is impressive, the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, also located Downtown, goes above and beyond to attract attention with its flashy marquee. Stax was originally a recording studio and record label that boasted the likes of Sam & Dave, Rufus Thomas, Otis Redding, and house band Booker T & the MGs. Once you get into Midtown, Joe’s Wines & Liquors showcases the eccentric Sputnik. This neon masterpiece is an important landmark for Rhodents and Memphians alike. When you head back Downtown, you run into the famous Sun Studios, where Elvis began his career. Despite this sign’s simplicity, it’s an iconic image for visitors from around the world. Finally, the Psychic Readings sign can be found on Union Avenue, one of the main streets students use, right across from the Walgreens. While it’s not a famous attraction, you will definitely see it often during your time at Rhodes.
