Where I Went: Nanjing, China
When I Went: Summer and Fall 2012
Program: CIEE - Intensive Language and Culture
My name is Brian Tchang and I am a Commerce & Business major and Chinese Studies minor. As a Korean American, I’m interested in integrating language proficiency in Mandarin Chinese, Korean, and English with my passion in Accounting. I’ll begin by saying that studying abroad has been one of the most influential experiences in my life. I began by journey abroad by working in the U.S. Consulate in Shenyang, China with the Commercial Service. Shortly after, I moved to Nanjing where I began my studies in Mandarin and Chinese culture. I lived in China for six months and for the duration of my stay I experienced the meaning of full cultural emersion to it’s fullest. Within six months I traveled between 17 cities where I studied the history of Buddhism along the Silk Road, was on TV in Dalian with the Consulate General and Chinese Party Secretary for a trade mission, visited the North Korean border from the crater of Mount Changbaishan, traveled to the most beautiful cities in China, and even hugged a panda in Chengdu! With this being said, I was also required to follow a language pledge where I spoke Mandarin from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm Monday-Friday! As a result of my study abroad experience I made friends from all corners of the world and have formed unforgettable memories and friendships that I will always cherish.
If you have interest in studying abroad and integrating your academic interest within your experience, please do not hesitate to ask me for any advice. I would love to share my experience with you.
