Hi my name is Marie and I studied abroad in Florence, Italy for a semester and I also did a Maymester in Bilbao, Spain. I used API to go to Florence and highly recommend it. It was a great program for me because they offered so many different classes, weekend excursions, and were incredibly accommodating throughout the whole semester. Florence was a great city for me because it has the excitement of a big city with the familiarity of a small town. Florence is also conveniently located in Tuscany, a region in central Italy known for its beautiful landscapes, which allows for easy traveling to small Tuscan towns and major cities like Rome and Venice. As an art history minor, Florence was a great place to study abroad because of its wonderful history and role during the Renaissance.
My month in Bilbao, Spain differed from Florence because I lived with a host family in Spain and I lived in an apartment in Bilbao. Having the opportunity to live with a Spanish family was such a treat because it allowed me to really immerse myself in the culture and practice speaking Spanish more so than if I had lived with other students. I absolutely love Spain and everything about its culture. Fútbol, tapas, siestas, and paella are only a few aspects of their culture that I love. While I was in Spain, I was able to travel to Segovia, Madrid, Barcelona, San Sebastian, and Guernica. All the cities were beautiful and had much to offer!
Studying abroad was an invaluable experience for me and gave me an appreciation and love for other cultures and traveling. I learned a lot about myself and gained confidence and independence through my abroad adventures!
