Hi, my name is Natalie Rolwes. I am a junior International Studies major and French minor.  I studied abroad with the Rhodes Turkey Maymester program in the summer of 2009. During our time there we studied identity politics, particularly in relation to the development of a single, unifying Turkish identity in an ethnically diverse region.

With Istanbul as our starting point, we traveled throughout Turkey’s amazingly diverse regions, spending time in Gallipoli, Ankara, Cappadocia, and Van. We also spent five days studying the statehood dispute in Northern Cyprus, and were able to walk through the no-man’s-land into the Republic of Cyprus.

My experience in Turkey was nothing short of incredible! I toured the Hagia Sophia, snorkeled in the Aegean, romped through underground cities, interviewed members of the Turkish Parliament, and even milked a sheep in a Kurdish village near the Iranian border! I highly recommend Maymesters to anyone and everyone looking to have a fulfilling summer experience.
