My name is Mark Handelman, and I am a Senior History major from Bethesda, MD.  During the spring semester of 2008 I studied abroad in China’s Yunnan Province.  The program (through Students for International Training) focused on language study and examined China’s minority cultures.  I lived in Yunnan’s capital, Kunming, for the majority of the program, on top of extensive travel throughout the rest of the province.  Two weeks were spent living with a home stay family in Kunming for the true urban experience, followed by a week long home stay visit with a rural family in the remote Shaaxi Valley.  The semester was a fulfilling and eye-opening encounter with the Far East.  Adjusting to new cultures and making life-long friends with locals is something I hope everyone at Rhodes may experience.
