Major: Business Administration
Minor: Chinese Studies
Studied Abroad: Chinese language, Chinese Business Practices
Studied In: Shanghai, China
My name is Rachel Harpool, I am a Junior Business major and a Chinese Studies minor. I studied abroad in China during the summer of 2008. I chose to study through CIEE. I lived in Shanghai for eight weeks where I studied Chinese language and Chinese Business Practices and Issues. I absolutely loved both Shanghai and CIEE. While in China, I attended East China Normal University and lived in a dorm with a Chinese roommate. I also had the opportunity to travel to Nanjing and Beijing. In Beijing, I visited the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, Tiananmen Square, and the new Olympic structures. But, ultimately, none of this could compare to my experiences in Shanghai. Shanghai will forever be the city closest to my heart. It is a combination of old Chinese traditions and the fast-paced urban environment of one of the world’s largest cities. Through my program I was able to take cooking and calligraphy classes, as well as volunteer with children with learning deficiencies. Since returning to America, I have begun work on my Freeman Asia service project where I am researching the career opportunities that study abroad in Asia can provide.
