J. Carey Thompson graduated from Furman University with a B.A. in Psychology, then received his M.Ed. in Institutional Advancement from Vanderbilt. He is the Vice President of Enrollment and Communications/Dean of Admission at Rhodes College and has been there in this capacity since July 2010. He served in various roles in admission at Furman University finally serving as Director of Admissions from 1989 to June 1998. From there he served as the Vice President of Enrollment and Student Planning Services/Dean of Admission and Student Financial Planning at Centre College from July 1998 to June 2010. He has also served on the board of the Common Application from 2008 to 2013 and as the President of the Board of the Common Application from September 2009 to 2013. In addition, he has served in a number of leadership roles and provided dozens of presentations at conferences in the Southern Association of College Admission Counseling, the Southern Consortium, the Southern Regional College Board, the College Board, and the National Association of College Admission Counseling.
His wife Vicki is the Dean of College Counseling at St. Mary’s Episcopal School for Girls. He has three children and has survived their admission to college.
