How prevalent are pathogenic, antibiotic resistant Vibrio species in ready-to-eat bivalves and seawater? How do these pathogens pass their antibiotic resistance mechanisms to intestinal flora, potentially creating a drug-resistant human pathogen, and by what horizontal transfer mechanism? What information can population analysis and metagenomic sequencing provide for the evolution of these Vibrio populations? Does climate change and increasing ocean temperature have an effect on Vibrio growth and spread around coastal areas? These are but a select number of questions Dr. Honsa’s research aims to answer.
