Rhodes and CBU Partner To Present 2013 MLK Birthday Celebration

Martin Luther King Service Day

Rhodes College and Christian Brothers University will celebrate the life and work of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with the following activities free and open to the public:

  • Jan. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at CBU in the Spain Auditorium 
    Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Oratorical Contest featuring fifth and sixth graders from various Jubilee schools
  • Jan. 10 at 1 p.m. at CBU in the Spain Auditorium 
    Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration with guest speaker Ann Sullivan and musical selections by the Peace Makers of the Memphis Police Department
  • Jan. 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Rhodes in the McCallum Ballroom 
    Day of Service led by Rhodes and CBU students with guest speaker Mayor A C Wharton
  • Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. at Rhodes in Barret Library 051 
    MLK Forum focusing on King’s ideals today with a faculty, student, and staff panel beginning the conversation
  • Jan. 15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Rhodes in the Lynx Lair 
    King’s Living Memorial including readings of King’s work by various Rhodes community members

These events are cosponsored by Rhodes’ Black Student Association, Kinney Program, Bonner Center for Faith and Service, Big Diehl, African American Studies Program, Department of Philosophy and Office of Multicultural Affairs as well as the Dean of Students Office at Christian Brothers University.
