Archives & Special Collections

There are three special collections located in the Special Collections Room on the first floor of Barret Library: the Rhodes Archives, the Walter P. Armstrong, Jr. Rare Book Collection and the Richard Halliburton Collection

The Rhodes Archives documents the rich history of Rhodes College by collecting and preserving official College records, publications (annuals, catalogues, college newspapers, handbooks, and more), presidential correspondence, clippings, minutes, faculty and alumni publications, maps, photographs, memorabilia audio and video tapes.

The Walter P. Armstrong, Jr. Rare Book Collection includes the special items of value added to the library through the years and the collection of first editions of English and American authors, many of them autographed, donated by Mr. Walter P. Armstrong, Jr., a prominent Memphis lawyer.

The Richard Halliburton Collection consists of manuscripts and artifacts relating to the life of this noted travel adventure writer.

Because of their importance and sometimes fragile nature, archival and special collection materials do not circulate.
