George Summey

George Summey, D. D.

Born in Ashville, North Carolina, Dr. Summey graduated from Davidson College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1870. He then attended Union Theological Seminary in Virginia and joined the ministry in 1873. He founded the Zeta Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha in 1874 at what was then East Tennessee University and is today the University of Tennessee. He served several Presbyterian churches and was managing editor of the Presbyterian Quarterly when he was elected Chancellor of SPU and Professor of Biblical History and English Bible.

Dr. Summey’s energy invigorated the campus and a gymnasium was completed, a practical course for engineering was added to the curriculum, and the Federal Government for damages sustained during the Civil War paid $25000 to the College. He was founder and manager of the Presbyterian and Reformed Review.
