John N. Waddel

John N. Waddel, D.D., L.L.D.

1879-1888, Southwestern Presbyterian University

When the Synods of the Southwest took over Stewart College and converted it to Southwestern Presbyterian University in 1879, Dr. John Newton Waddel became chancellor. He had served as president of the University of Georgia (1819-1829), as a professor of Greek and Latin at the University of Mississippi, as president of LaGrange Syndical College and of the University of Mississippi.

Dr. Waddel was loved and admired by both students and faculty and was greatly missed when he retired in 1888. His Memorials of Academic Life: being an historical sketch of the Waddel Family was published in 1891. A copy is located in the Rhodes Collection (LA2317.W3 A2). He died in 1895.
