Richard Nelson Newell

Reverend Newell became president in the summer of 1849 and served until a decline in his health required him to resign in July of 1850.  Upon his resignation, the faculty recognized his high level of literary and scientific knowledge and thanked him for his “amiable and  pleasing qualities.”
