Sending Email from Non-Rhodes Accounts On-Campus

Rhodes blocks all outgoing SMTP email sending. What this means is that you will not be able to use a non-Rhodes SMTP (outgoing) server to send email. Any port 25 connections off-campus are blocked at the firewall. The reason for this restriction is to prevent an on-campus computer from being used to send spam via non-Rhodes SMTP servers. In some cases, spyware and viruses can take over your computer and use it to send spam. By blocking these connections, ITS can prevent them from getting off-campus, and we are alerted to the problem so that it can be solved on the problem machine.

This means that you will need to configure your email accounts in Outlook Express (or Outlook or Eudora or Apple Mail, whatever email program you are using) to use the Rhodes SMTP server to send email for your non-Rhodes email accounts. The Rhodes SMTP server is:

smtp.rhodes.edu

Remember that you will need to change the SMTP server back to the service provider′s SMTP server when trying to send email using that account when you are not at Rhodes, such as when you go home for Winter Break.
