Connecting to Email with Microsoft Outlook Express

We recommend you use Microsoft Outlook as your email client because it takes full advantage of the Rhodes Exchange server.

1. Click the Windows Start button, hover over Programs and select Outlook Express.

2. If this is the first time Outlook Express has been run, skip to step 4.  Otherwise, from the menu bar, open Tools and select Accounts.

3. In the dialog box that opens, click the Add button at the right and select Mail...

4. In the first box that pops up, type your name in the text box.  Click Next.

5. In the second box that pops up, type your name (smijq@rhodes.edu, if your name is John Q. Smith).  Click Next.

6. In the third box that opens, make sure the incoming server is set to IMAP.

7. The incoming mail server should be set to xch.rhodes.edu

8. If you’re on-campus, the outgoing mail server should be set to smtp.rhodes.edu. Otherwise, use the SMTP server of your Internet Service Provider (e.g., mail.bellsouth.net).  Click Next.

9. For the Account name, set the value to your Rhodes e-mail username.

10. In the Password, enter your current e -mail password.  Make sure Remember password is checked. 

11. Check the box labeled Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) .

12. Click Next.

13. Click Finish, and you’re done!
