Goss sets NCAA National Qualifying Mark, School Record

The Lady Lynx broke three school records, including Freshman Julia Goss (Visitation/St.Louis,MO) in the long jump. Her performance of 5.52 meters (18'1.5) is an NCAA National Provisional Qualifying mark and has her ranked 5th in the nation. In the long jump trials, Goss initially set a qualifying mark with her jump of 5.44 meters. Then in her sixth and final jump of the day, Goss propelled herself to a career personal best and best jump in Rhodes history. It was also her first time over the 18-foot mark.

Three other Lady Lynx also broke school records at the

Depauw Invitational. In the 55 meter hurdles, Sophomore Alanna Topps (Gallatin/Hendersonville,TN) continued her excellence with the setting of a school record in a time of 8.78 and a 2nd place finish. Senior Elizabeth Erny (Sacred Heart/Louisville,KY) won the pole vault with a jump of 3.05 meters (10'). Freshman Kim Tryon (Gulf Breeze/Gulf Breeze,FL) finished in 2nd place in the pole vault also with a jump of 3.05 meters (10'). Both Erny and Tryon now share the school record in the pole vault. Sophomore Annie Bell also helped Rhodes dominate the jump events by winning the triple jump with a mark of 10.59 meters (34'9). Tryon also finished second in the triple jump in 10.34 meters (33'11.25). Sophomore Valisa Berber-Thayer (Fredricksburg/Fredricksburg,TX) finished 3rd in the long jump with a large personal best of 5.15 meters (16'10.75). To round out the jumps, Sophomore Bekka Russ (Franklin/Franklin,TX) finished 3rd in the high jump. She reached a height of 1.52 meters (4'11.75) competing in the event for the first time. Russ also rounded out a strong vaulting performance by the Lynx with a 4th place finish at 2.90 meters (9'6.25).

On the track, Freshman Elizabeth Bernard (Southlake Carroll/Southlake,TX) set a personal best with a time of 1:05.26, while Rhodes rested many of their 400 meter runners. The distance medley relay team consisting of Junior Sha King (Kirby/Memphis,TN), Freshman Charlotte Ashford (Highland Park/Highland Park,IL), Freshman Kate Scherer (St.Ursula/Cincinnati,OH), and Freshman Meredith Jones (Ridgewood/Ridgewood,NJ) combined to run 13:32 and finish in 3rd place. Covic returned later in the day to run 2:26.25 with a 4th place finish in the 800 meters.

The Lynx men rested many of their runners, but still saw personal bests set by Junior Dave Huntzinger (Maclay/Tallahassee,FL), 9:16.77, and Senior Jon Snape (Langley/McLean,VA), 10:00.55, in the 3,000 meter run, Sophomore Steele French (Milton/Alpharetta,Ga), in the mile run, 4:33.82,and Freshman Jeremy Moye (McCallie/Ooltewah,TN),55.10, and Sophomore Christian Dewhurst (Epsicopal/Bellaire,TX), 56.51, in the 400 meters.

In the field events, Moye vaulted to a new personal best of 3.65 meters (12'), which helped him capture 6th place. Junior Will Pitts (Country Day/Charlotte,NC) also reached a personal best in the vault with a jump of 3.50 meters (11'6). Pitts also lost in a jump-off to finish 2nd place in the high jump clearing 1.83 meters (6').

The Lynx will be in action at several indoor last chance meets, before opening up their season at home on March 17th.
