12/02/06

Junior Will Pitts (Country Day/Charlotte,NC) established a new school record in the Heptathlon at the Arkansas Kickoff Klassic this weekend. With a total of 3774 points, Pitts completed his first multievent of his career. Pitts competed in the high hurdles, shot put, and pole vault for the first-time ever. With only a couple months training under his belt, his vault of 11' shows a lot of promise. Pitts looked strong in the high jump with a mark of 6'0 and the 1000 meter run with a time of 2:51. Pitts will look to compete again in the Heptathlon at Indiana University in February, with his sights set on qualifying for the Decathlon at NCAA Division III Outdoor Nationals in May.

Aside from Pitts, the Lynx had 5 athletes competing in their first college meet. Freshman Greg Cook (St.

John's/Bellaire,TX) started on Friday night with a triple jump of 41'6. Cook came back on Saturday to run the 400 meter dash in a time of 53.44. Cook also finished the day off with a 53 second leadoff leg on the team's 4x400 meter relay.

Teammate, Freshman Cory Dardenne (Northeast Christian/Kingwood,TX) also had a busy weekend, competing in four events. Dardenne ran the 200 meter dash in 23.88 seconds, which is the fastest indoor time in the last four years and third-fastest performance indoors at Rhodes College since 2000. Dardenne also competed in the 55 meter dash with a time of 6.91 and ran a 53 second split in the relay.

Freshman Jeremy Moye (McCallie/Ooltewah,TN) had a successful debut in the 55 meter high hurdles. His time of 8.56 in the semifinals is only a tenth of a second off of last year's best performance at Rhodes. Other performances included Freshman Anson Purdy (Oratory Prep/Westfield,NJ) with a time of 1:28 in the 600 meter, Sophomore Christian Dewhurst (Episcopal/Bellaire,TX) setting a three second career best in the 400 meter dash, and in the field events Sophomore Larry Hurd (Bartlett/Memphis,TN) with a shot put 38 feet.

The men will return to action in January with a partial squad competing at Southern Illinois and a full squad competing at Rose Hulman Institue of Technology during the month.
