Men finish 4th at SCAC Championship
04/29/07

The men's team improved two spots upon last year to finish in fourth place at the conference meet in San Antonio, Texas. Freshman Greg Cook (St.John's/Bellaire,TX) led the way finishing 1st in the triple jump, 2nd in the javelin, and 3rd in the 400 meter dash. Cook had the second most points at the meet with 25.

After losing the lead in the triple jump in the third, fourth, fifth rounds, Cook jumped 13.66 meters (44'9) to reclaim the lead and take the conference title in the triple jump. With the 400 meter preliminaries between the javelin trials and finals, Cook was unable to improve on his first throw of 53.89 meters (176'10), which was still good enough for second place. Cook also ran 51.24 in the finals of the 400 meter dash, and also helped the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays to 6th and 7th place finishes.

Sophomore Larry Hurd (Bartlett/Bartlett,TN) won the only other individual conference championship for the men. His throw of 43.83 meters (143'9) was a career-best, as well as the best throw in the conference this year. Junior Will Pitts (Country Day/Charlotte,NC) also contributed in the field events. Pitts finished 5th in the javelin with a career-best throw of 48.77 meters (160') and 7th in the high jump with a mark of 1.82 meters (6').

In the men’s distance events, Junior Alex Mahoney (New Trier/Winnetka, IL) continued to excel as he ran the 10000m for the first time in his career in a time of 32:46 and placed 2nd, earning him All-Conference honors. Mahoney also finished 6th in the 5000m run. Junior Nick Lewis (Gaylord, MI), running in his first meet of the season for the Lynx, found his way into the point scorers as he ran off Mahoney’s heels for most of the 10000m run before finishing 4th in 33:13. Lewis also used a strong kick in the 5000m run in order to nab an 8th place finish. Sophomore Steele French (Milton/Alpharetta, GA) dropped nearly 7 seconds off his 1500m meter best, as he crossed the line in 4th at 4:01.02, having run an intelligently paced race. Junior Dave Huntzinger (Maclay/Tallahassee, FL) and sophomore Mark Handelman (Whitman/Bethesda, MD) added to the Lynx point total as they placed 6th and 8th, respectively in the 3000m steeplechase.

Freshman Jeremy Moye (McCallie/Ooltewah,TN) was an important contributor to a growing sprint squad for the men. Moye finished 7th in the 110 meter high hurdles with a time of 16.99 and finished 6th in the pole vault with a leap of 3.98 meters (13'). Both performances were career-bests. Moye was also a member of both the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays. Freshman Anson Purdy has also been another key newcomer to the Lynx sprinters. Purdy ran the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 57.66 in the finals to place fifth.

A few individuals will compete the next few weekends, looking to hit NCAA Provisional Qualifying Marks. The Lynx will return in the fall with a large freshman class that will add much needed depth in the distance events and a few key incoming freshman that will make an impact in the relays, hurdles, and throws.
