Full Squad Competes Well in Multitude of Events

The mens track and field team competed for the first time this season as a full squad at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. The throwers, jumpers, sprinters, and distance runners all had several great performances, including the breaking of two indoor school records.
The distance runners were back on the track for the first time this season, making their presence felt in the mile, with Sophomore Lucas Warth (Ames/Ames,IA) breaking the indoor school record in a time of 4:28.59. Warth outkicked Senior Will Sheftall (Brookwood/Thomasville,GA) and Junior Alex Mahoney (New Trier/Winnetka,IL) who were also under the previous school record set back in 1994. Sophomore Steele French (Milton/Alpharetta,GA)also had a strong race setting a major personal best with a time of 4:34.84.
The field events proved to be strong for Rhodes as well. Sophomore Larry Hurd (Bartlett/Memphis,TN) broke the school record for the indoor shot put with an early season mark of 13.38 meters. Freshman Greg Cook (St. John's/Bellaire,TX) led the way in the jumps winning the triple jump with a career personal best of 13.22 meters (434.5). In the high jump, Junior Will Pitts (Country Day/Charlotte,NC) cleared 1.87 meters (61.5), tieing for second place. Pitts also cleared a personal best 3.47 meters (114.5) in the pole vault.
The sprinters also enjoyed a successful day on the track. Freshman Anson Purdy (Oratory/Westfield,NJ) finished in sixth place for the 400 meter dash in a personal best time of 53.66. Cory Dardenne (Northeast Christian/Kingwood,TX) also captured a sixth place finish in the 200 meters despite drawing the tight turns of lane 1. The Lynx finished the day nearly breaking the school record in the 4x400 meter relay, with a team featuring Warth, Purdy, Dardenne, and Cook.
