Lynx battle no. 18 Washington University (MO) scoreless draw, 0-0
9/08/06...

The Lynx faced their first difficult test of the 2006 season as they went out on the road to battle two Missouri foes. First game was against nationally ranked Washington University (MO). The Lynx were looking to see where they stood after an impressive first weekend at home, going 1-1. The Lynx came out strong in the first half, but the Bears were the first to mount any kind of offensive attack, quickly attacking down the flank and putting in cross after cross. The Lynx defense proved that they were up to the challenge, however, as time and again the Lynx were able to turn away several scoring opportunities by the Bears in the first half. Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Margolin came up huge in the first half with several quality saves to keep his team tied going into halftime.

Heading into the second half, the Lynx made a few adjustments at halftime to try and mount some sort of offensive attack. Junior midfielder Chase LaFont made several key defensive stops in the midfield that he was almost able to convert into a goal. The Bears were still creating several quality scoring opportunities, but Margolin was there to make the save every time. It was not until the game went into overtime that the Lynx had their best scoring opportunity of the entire game. In the 118th minute, freshman forward Zack Berry stole a ball from a Washington University defender, and Berry was in for a breakaway. However, Bears goalkeeper John Smelcer was able to smother the scoring chance. The game would end in a tie with the Bears outshooting the Lynx 27-3. Goalkeeper Alex Margolin ended the night with 16 saves.
