Rhodes men's soccer records third scoreless tie of season
9/24/06...
After being defeated by the no. 1 team in the nation 6-0, the Lynx were hoping that there were some very valuable lessons learned from Friday night. Heading into the game, the Lynx were feeling confident knowing that the scoring chances created against Trinity would not be wasted again. Southwestern, who had come in second or third place in the SCAC the past three years, was coming into the game having beaten Millsaps 5-0 Friday night.
The Lynx opened the game by putting more pressure on the outside midfielders hoping to invite the Pirates into making several dangerous passes that the Lynx would be able to steal and create turnovers. The plan worked, as senior midfielder Brad Crawford (Roswell, GA) was able to send in several dangerous balls into the box. The Lynx' best scoring chance came as the first half was winding down that Crawford collected a ball on the right side and fired a one-time shot at the goal that beat the keeper but hit the post and bounced out of play.
Opening the second half, the Lynx still were unable to capitalize on the scoring chances that they were creating. Southwestern was creating scoring chances themselves, but junior defender Christian Reeser (Memphis, TN) and sophomore goalkeeper Alex Margolin (Austin, TX) were doing a good job of limiting the Pirates to scoring chances outside the box. Heading into overtime, the Lynx were presented with the best chance of overtime as junior forward Douglas Atkinson (Plano, TX) had a breakaway but Pirates goalkeeper Ryan Tasin made the save. The game ended in a 0-0 tie, the third scoreless tie in the 2006 season.
The Lynx are back in action this Friday at home as they continue SCAC play against Centre College at 4:00 pm. On Sunday, October 1, the Lynx take on DePauw University at home at 12:00 noon and then will have a team luncheon as part of Parents Weekend immediately following the game Sunday.
