SAAC Names Student-Athletes of the Month
3/8/07
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has named Sophomore Cory Smith (Bartlett, TN), Junior Kareem Mansur (Houston, TX) and Senior Cianna Pender (Marianna, FL) as the Student-Athletes of the Month for February.
In February alone, Smith averaged 23.2 points per game, 2.8 rebounds per game, and 2.2 assists per game. In an outstanding display of athleticism, Smith scored 44 points against Oglethorpe University to break the school record for points in a single game. He posted impressive season stats as well, leading the SCAC in scoring (18.8 points per game) and finished the season ranked 4th with a free throw percentage of 80.5%.
Mansur has dominated the Atlantic South region playing #1 singles and #1 doubles for the men's tennis team. Over the weekend of March 3rd, Mansur led the Lynx to a 8-1 team victory over Sewanee. Having led the Lynx to a 5-0 start in Division III tennis and a 4-0 start in SCAC play with his season record of 4-0 at both singles and doubles, Mansur is a strong candidate to qualify for the NCAA Division III National Championships. Currently, he is ranked #5 in the Atlantic South Region in singles and #6 in doubles.
Pender has opened the season with a .600 batting average, belting a team-leading 6 doubles, 1 triple, 11 RBI and 8 runs scored. She also leads the team in stolen bases with 3 and has a slugging percentage of 1.000. In a 15-14, 8-inning win over MacMurray, she was a perfect 5-for-5 with three doubles and a triple, driving in five runs and scoring four. Her RBI single in the bottom of the eighth tied the game, and she later scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch. Pender scored or drove in Rhodes last 7 runs of the game. Overall on Sunday, she was 8-for-8. The Lynx are off to the best start in school history at 6-0.
