Class Reporters
Class Notes is the most closely read feature of Rhodes Magazine, and we need alumni volunteers to help solicit, write and edit news for a three-times-a-year column reporting news of your class.
How are the Class Notes columns prepared?
- Alumni submit news about jobs, family, hobbies and achievements to their Class Reporter by phone, mail or e-mail.
- Reporters also solicit news twice per issue—once well in advance of the deadline and again 2-3 weeks before deadline. Class contact information (phone, mail and e-mail) is provided by the Alumni Office.
- Class Reporters review the drafts, adding personal touches. They also integrate other information of interest to the class, such as reunion plans.
- Class Reporters return the finished copy to the editor of Rhodes Magazine for publication by the required deadline (two months prior to publication).
- Between deadlines, Class Reporters regularly report changes of name or address, births, marriages and deaths to the Alumni Office when received directly from a classmate.
Qualifications for Class Reporter
- Willingness to solicit classmate information
- Commitment to meeting firm deadlines three times a year (The editor sends deadlines to Reporters well in advance, along with a reminder one month prior to deadline.)
- Interest in regularly reading and writing news of your classmates
- Adherence to the writing style guidelines provided by the Alumni Office
- Ability to make interesting reading from often overwhelmingly similar news items: weddings, babies and new jobs in the more recent classes; grandchildren, travel and retirement plans in the earlier classes
