Working in the United States
Because the regulations governing foreign workers in the United States change frequently and differ according to visa status, you shouldn’t plan to support yourself by working off-campus while at Rhodes.
Important facts concerning finances and working in the U.S.:
-
You will be required to provide evidence of adequate financial support on your application for a student visa.
-
Unauthorized employment is illegal and punishable by deportation.
-
Authorized employment opportunities for international students are limited and competitive. None are immediately available upon arrival.
-
Some types of income are taxable, including income from assistantships. Earnings from many stipends will be subject to U.S. federal tax withholding. Anyone holding an F or J visa is required by law to file an income tax statement each year regardless of the source or amount of income. Tax forms and workshops will be offered during the winter of each year in order to assist international students.
Non-paying internships and volunteer opportunities are not included in the restrictions listed above.
