Thursday, August 21

9:00 AM to 2:00 PM: New Student Move-In
Your Residence Hall
Peer Assistants (PAs) and Resident Assistants (RAs) will be on hand to help carry boxes and get new students settled into their rooms

11:30 AM to 2:00 PM: Lunch (Optional)
If you do not want to go off campus for lunch, you can purchase a bite to eat on campus either at the Burrow Refectory (the Rat) or the Lynx Lair

2:30 PM to 3:30 PM: Ice Cream Social
Glassell/West Village Quad
You and your family/friends are invited to join Rhodes College faculty and staff members for a refreshing ice cream social to cool down and meet new people. Parents and families will say “goodnight” to their students at this time, while students will remain on campus to meet with their Peer Assistants and continue with activities.

3:00 PM to 4:00 PM: Commuter Student Check-In

Commuting students will check in and receive their Welcome Week schedule

3:00 PM to 4:00 PM: Legacy Social
Barret Library, Middle Ground
The Alumni Relations Office welcomes students and families who are legacies at Rhodes to meet and mingle with each other

4:00 PM to 5:00 PM: PA Group Check-In
Check your schedule for location
This is your chance to meet with your Peer Assistants (PAs) and other new students to hear more about what to expect during Welcome Week

7:30 PM to 8:30 PM:
Residence Hall Meeting

Your Residence Hall: Your Resident Assistant (RA) will lead a discussion with you and your hall mates about campus policies and procedures
Transfer Student Meeting(West Village Social Room): You will meet other transfer students, some Residence Life staff, and begin to learn about campus policies and procedures
Commuter Student Meeting (Middle Ground): Staff members and current commuter students will be available to discuss useful strategies for making your transition to Rhodes a smooth one

8:30 PM: Rhodes Minute-To-Win-It

Explore your new campus with your classmates during this fun-filled night of activities. Wear your tennis shoes!

Friday, August 22

The Class of 2018 will line up in the east corridor of Frazier Jelke and walk to the BCLC. The rain location will be the BCLC west corridor.

9:30 AM: Opening Convocation

Opening Convocation marks the beginning of the academic year and the entry of the new class into the Rhodes community. Parents and families are encouraged to attend the first official academic event of their student’s career at Rhodes.

10:30 AM to 11:00 AM: Student/Family Good-bye
Students will have a chance to say good-bye to their parents, families and friends

11:00 AM to 1:00 PM: PA Meetings, Lunch in PA Groups

3:00 PM to 4:30 PM: Health Professions Info Session
BCLC, Ballroom

This is a mandatory first meeting for anyone interested in a health profession or veterinary medicine (including Allopathic Medicine [MD], Osteopathic Medicine [DO], Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Physician Assistant, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Optometry, Podiatric Medicine, Chiropractic Medicine, Naturopathic Medicine, Public Health, Veterinary Medicine, and any other clinical health career). This meeting is your introduction to Health Professions Advising at Rhodes. All future communication regarding HPA will be to the e-mail distribution list generated by this meeting. If there is a legitimate reason to miss this meeting, please contact Dr. Alan Jaslow, Director, HPA at ajaslow@rhodes.edu.

Blending a unique combination of improvisational comedy, education, and audience participation, Sex Signals provides a provocative look at the issues of dating, sex, and ultimately acquaintance rape on college campuses.

Rhodes College was recently named again as the #1 "Most Service Oriented College" by Newsweek Magazine. Students will learn about the Kinney Program and service opportunities in Memphis.

Buses will load every 20 minutes on University Street outside of the main campus entrance from 7 to 8:45 pm. It’s a shopping opportunity for Rhodes’ first-year students to get last-minute necessities. All shopping expenses are on your own.

Sunday, August 24

Did you know that one night of drinking can affect your ability to think abstractly for 30 days? You will have the opportunity to learn, discuss and ask questions about all aspects of the Social and Alcohol Policy at Rhodes College.

Learn more about the Rhodes community and your role in maintaining its standards. Take part in discussions on community values with current leaders and members of Honor Council and Social Regulations Council.

Dress your best (ties for men) to attend a formal dinner in preparation for the pledge signing.

7:00 PM to 9:00 PM: Pledge Signing
Evergreen Presbyterian Church
The pledge outlines the standards of conduct for the Rhodes community. All new students to Rhodes must pledge to uphold these standards.

9:00 PM to 10:30 PM: CUP Improv Show
McCoy Theatre
Enjoy a performance by Contents Under Pressure (CUP), the Rhodes improv comedy troupe at Rhodes.

Monday, August 25

9:00 AM to 11:00 AM: Language Testing, Placement, and Program Information
Faculty will be available to provide information about curricular and co-curricular opportunities for language study and answer any questions about online placement results.  During this session, follow-up testing for those who scored at the 202 level or above on the online placement exam will either be administered or scheduled for an alternative time.  For those languages that do not offer online placement testing (Chinese, Greek, Hebrew, Latin), exams will be administered or placement recommendations clarified.  Spanish - Frazier Jelke C; German - Buckman 108; French - Frazier Jelke A; Greek/Latin - Palmer 206; Chinese - Palmer 210; Russian - Palmer 116

Rhodes partners with the ROTC unit at the University of Memphis to offer students opportunities to prepare for military service while gaining a great college education. This session will focus on the financial and leadership benefits that you could receive through participating in ROTC.

Join and connect with other LGBT and Ally members of the Rhodes Community.  The Gay-Straight Alliance, Queer Advocates, LGBT Working Group, Safe Zones, and F.A.Q.F.A.S. (“Fabulous Association of Queer Faculty and Staff”) invite all LGBT and Ally first-year students to attend.  There will be information on how to participate in the LGBT Peer Mentoring program.

Come out and kick off the year with your classmates with free food and music. This event is sponsored by the Black Student Association.

Saturday, August 30

Meet at the BCLC Ballroom
This is an opportunity for first-year students to experience serving the Memphis Community through various nonprofits in the city. Transportation, breakfast and lunch are provided.
