Rhodes Jazz Ensemble

John Bass, Director

The Rhodes Jazz Ensemble is a performing group that explores jazz literature from all historic periods of the music. The group offers an introduction to jazz style for students with little experience, but also offers more advanced students an opportunity to grow musically. Issues of interpretation, improvisation, and ensemble techniques are all discussed and implemented into performances. The ensemble performs several times per semester and recently participated in a masterclass with Grammy-nominated saxophonist Jeff Kirk. Recent repertoire includes pieces by Herbie Hancock, Jimmy Smith, Miles Davis, and Benny Golson, among others. The ensemble is open to all singers and instrumentalists, pending an audition with the director. One hour of college credit is available for participation in the Rhodes Jazz Ensemble.
