AP & Transfer Credit
AP Credit
Students may take the AP exam in United States History or World History. Students may receive up to 8 hours of credit, 4 for the AP U.S. History exam and 4 for the AP World History exam. A score of 4 or 5 receives 4 hours credit as Hist 099. Hist 099 does not count toward the History major or minor, nor does it carry Foundational Credit.
Transfer Credit and Study Abroad
In order to transfer credit from another institution, the course must first be approved by the Department Chair before the student invests time and money in the course. The following guidelines must be followed:
- The course must be offered by an accredited, 4-year college or university.
- Credit can be earned as 099 or at the 200 level.
- History majors must take their required seminar courses in residence.
- In cases where limited information about the desired course or program is available, the Department Chair may provide only provisional permission. In that case, the student must provide the syllabus along with test and writing assignments in order for a final assessment of the coursework to be made. Approval is not guaranteed.
- Students are discouraged from taking broad survey courses that Rhodes does not offer, such as “Western Civilization from 1500-present” or “United States to 1877.” Look instead for more specific themes or periods.
Student Responsibilities
- Set a meeting with the Department Chair.
- Whether domestic or international, secure a course description and/or syllabus (often available on the web).
- Bring a transfer of credit form (available from the Registrar’s forms page) or the Buckman Center Study Abroad form along with the course description or syllabus.
- Turn in the completed and signed form to the Registrar.
British Studies and European Studies
These programs are administered by Rhodes College and therefore are considered Rhodes courses (not transfer credit). Grades earned are computed into G.P.A.
