Transferring Credit

Department of Biology Transfer Credit Policy

The Biology Department will normally accept transfer credit from other institutions of learning if 1) the institution is a 4 year accredited institution and 2) the course taken is offered through a Biology Department at the other institution as a part of a bachelor degree program.

Transfer credit for non-science majors and introductory students is usually awarded in one of two forms:

Four credits in Topics in Biology (Bio-104) or Topics in Biology with Labratory (bio-105) – Typically awarded for topics classes at other institutions or classes designed for students who are not planning on majoring in the sciences. One semester classes on Human Anatomy and Physiology are currently considered topics courses.

Four - five credits in one introductory sequence course and its lab (BIO-130,131 or BIO 140,141). Transfer courses that would be credited in this way would include introductory courses for science majors that have an accompanying lab attached to them.

Students transferring courses to fulfill a college distribution requirement should recognize that College policy stipulates that 1) only one of the three required courses can be transferred and 2) of the three required courses no more than two can be biology classes. The college does not allow transfer credit to satisfy Foundation Requirements

Transfer credit for upper-level courses will generally be awarded if the course meets the general criteria listed above and is similar in scope and content to a course that is offered by the Rhodes Department of Biology. On occasion, courses which address specific interests of the student or which provide a special opportunity such as in foreign study will be accepted.

Procedure

When you have identified the course(s) you are seeking to take for transfer credit, obtain a transfer credit approval form from the registrar and complete the form (do not fill out how the course may be credited in Biology). Email the Chair of the Department of Biology to make an appointment to consider approval for the course(s). You must provide the Chair a description of the course and/or a course syllabus. Obtain the remaining signatures on the form and turn it in to the registrar. YOU MUST COMPLETE THE APPROVAL PROCESS PRIOR TO TAKING THE CLASS!
