Transfer Policy

Credit for mathematics or computer science courses at other four-year colleges or universities may be transferred to Rhodes provided the student seeking the transfer:

  • Requests and receives approval from the department chairperson before taking the course
  • Scores at least 70% on an Equivalency Examination for the corresponding Rhodes course

Before taking a course elsewhere, a student must seek the approval of the chair of the Math/CS Department regarding the comparability of the proposed course with one at Rhodes. If the chair finds that the course is suitable for transfer, he or she will sign the Request for Approval of Transfer Credit form available in the Registrar’s office, with a notation that the course will transfer only after the student has taken and scored satisfactorily on the Equivalency Examination. The Department will send the student a list of topics they can expect to encounter on the exam. To facilitate the approval process, the student should provide:

  • The portion of the catalog describing the mathematics or computer science program of the institution from which credit is to be transferred
  • A copy of the syllabus of the specific course the student is requesting; this should show the textbook used, sections covered, and a description of the requirements of students in the course.

For courses taken during the summer, the Equivalency Examination will be given from 8:30 -11:00 a.m. the day before the first day of fall classes (contact Michelle Hammontree, hammontreem@rhodes.edu, for scheduling information) in the Buckman Library of Ohlendorf Hall. The exam will be comprehensive: typically the material and depth of the exam will be consistent with that of the final exam in the corresponding Rhodes course. There will be no re-taking of the exam, and students who fail to show up for it will not receive credit for the course
