Ides of March Reenactment: March 8th
CA′ESAR will perform a reenactment of its namesake′s devise the week before the Ides of March. Come to the Lynx statue at 12:15 see fake blood, fake knives, and real Shakespeare!
Rome on HBO
CA‘ESAR, the Classical and ′Ellenic Society at Rhodes, will continue to sponsor viewings of the second season of HBO’s Rome in Barret Library 034 on Wednesdays from 9:30-10:30 pm. For more information, please contact Michelle Currie (curml@rhodes.edu).
Bruce Elementary
Eta Sigma Phi sponsors a service project at Bruce Elementary school (near the corner of Peabody and Bellevue), in which Rhodes students and faculty introduce elementary school students (grades 2-5) to the classical world.
Eta Sigma Phi provides a snack and then does a short presentation or activity, with active being the key word. In the past the students have taught the kids a Greek song and dance & Roman numerals; made pottery; held an Olympics, where the young athletes threw a frisbee discuss, and told lots of fabulae/mythoi. "The Shifting Sense of ′Self-Sufficiency′ in Aristotle′s Discussion of Happiness": December 3rd
Professor Kirk Sanders is an Assistant Professor of Classics and Philosophy at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is co–editor of a volume of essays, Epicurus and the Epicurean Tradition, recently accepted for publication by Cambridge University Press. He is also finishing up work on a monograph in which he attempts to reconstruct an Epicurean theory of the emotions, paying special attention to relatively neglected treatises partially preserved among the Herculaneum papyri. In addition to his continued work in Hellenistic philosophy, he has recently turned his attention to Xenophon’s Socratic writings. He is currently in the process of producing a new English translation of these (i.e., Apology, Memorabilia, Oeconomicus, and Symposium) for Hackett Publishing. The lecture will take place at 7:00 pm on December 3 in Buckman 110. It is co-sponsored by the Department of Greek and Roman Studies, the Search Program, and the Department of Philosophy. CA'ESAR will sponsor a celebration of the ancient Roman Saturnalia festival on Sunday, Decemer 6th. Revelers can participate in typical Roman festivities like dressing up in costumes and playing 'White Elephant' and knucklebones. Italian food will be provided.
