NEW FACULTY
Dr. Jon Davis joins the Department of Biology as a Faculty Fellow and the Memphis Zoo as a Research Fellow this fall. He hails from Illinois, but has spent the past two decades in the Arizona deserts where he earned his B.S. in biology from Northern Arizona University in 2002 and his Ph.D. in biology from Arizona State University in 2008. His undergraduate research focused on the close association between lizards and prairie dog burrows, which led him to more closely examine the physiological and behavioral ecology of lizards in deserts. At ASU, Dr. Davis was supported by a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship while he studied the interactions between water availability, activity patterns, and body condition in Gila Monsters and also initiated a science-education mentoring program for under-represented junior high students. He was recognized as ASU’s Outstanding Graduate Student Mentor in 2006, was featured in National Geographic in September, 2006, and received the Storer Award from the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists in 2008. Dr. Davis is excited to become part of the Rhodes community as a teacher, researcher, and mentor.
Dr. Luque de Johnson, a native of Mexico, joins the Department of Biology as an Assistant Professor. She received her B.S in Biology from Florida International University. Dr. Luque de Johnson went on to receive her M.S and Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of Texas at Dallas. She then continued her scientific training as a postdoctoral research fellow at St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, where she studied viral entry and focused on vaccine development. During her time at St. Jude, Dr. Luque de Johnson participated in the Rhodes Learning Corridor as a mentor for high school students. She also taught briefly at Rhodes as part of the Rhodes Teaching Fellowship program. Dr. Luque de Johnson is excited about joining the Biology Department and will be teaching Biology of Human Parasites in the Fall and Microbiology in the Spring semester.

GRANTS AND AWARDS
Drs. Loretta Jackson-Hayes, Terry Hill, Darlene Loprete and Mary Miller received a grant from the Merck/AAAS Undergraduate Science Research Program (http://www.merckaaasusrp.org/). The program is sponsored by The Merck Institute for Science Education administered by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), with the goal of supporting student research at the interface between chemistry and biology, and of encouraging students to attend graduate school. The award ($60,000 over three years) provides four stipends in each of the next three summers to support students who will work in these professors’ laboratories. Some participating students will be drawn from four regional Historically Black Colleges. The grant also supports a visiting young investigator each year to present a seminar and meet informally with students interested in graduate school. Some additional support for this program is provided by the Provost and the Departments of Biology and Chemistry.

BIOFEEDBACK
The purpose of BIOFEEDBACK is to provide an important and timely vehicle for the transfer of information concerning BOTH faculty and students of the Biology Department. Any notices or information that you wish to include in BIOFEEDBACK should be submitted to either Dr. Carolyn Jaslow at cjaslow@rhodes.edu or Dr. Alan Jaslow at ajaslow@rhodes.edu. BIOFEEDBACK will be published each semester.
