The Director of the Mathematics Support Center (MSC) is a faculty member who, in addition to regular teaching duties, oversees all aspects of the operation of the MSC. The MSC provides support for students in introductory-level courses in mathematics and computer science. Current MSC activities include peer tutoring, workshops, and organized study groups, and it is expected that the MSC will continue to offer a variety of forms of support. It is hoped that over time the mission of the MSC will expand to include support for quantitative aspects of courses across the curriculum at Rhodes.
The Director works with a student assistant to recruit, train, and supervise peer tutors and workshop leaders. The Director coordinates planning of support services with instructors of relevant courses, and is responsible for outreach to maintain the centrality and visibility of the MSC. The Director prepares an annual report on the MSC, including quantitative data on the services offered during the year. It is expected that some of the courses taught by the Director will explore pedagogies that integrate the MSC more fully into the curriculum.
The MSC Director is expected to be familiar with current trends in support strategies for undergraduate mathematics education. A personal research program is not a requirement of the position, although professional travel support will be available.
The MSC Director is not eligible for tenure. The Director receives a three-year renewable appointment in the position, pending satisfactory review. Like other non-tenured faculty, the Director undergoes basic evaluation on an annual basis.
