Written in the 17th century this is a classic comedy in which, according to Richard Wilbur, “1) a knave tries to control life by cold chicanery, 2) a fool tries to oppress life by unconscious misuse of the highest values and, 3) life, happily, will not have it.”  What was funny and perplexing then, you will find again in our very present and “timeless” Tartuffe.
