Rhodes-Hill Mural Project: Request for Qualifications
Site Description
The vacant building located at 195 Madison Avenue in downtown Memphis, Tennessee, was built in 1913 and formerly housed the Toof Printing Company. Located immediately adjacent to the leftfield of the Memphis Redbirds minor league baseball stadium, the wall in consideration is visible both from Madison Avenue and from the stadium. The project is being coordinated by the Rhodes College Center for Outreach in the Development of the Arts (CODA) and the building’s current owner, Mr. Wilton Hill, a trustee of the college. Advisory support shall be provided by the UrbanArt Commission.
Project Description
The CODA program is seeking an experienced mural artist to produce an original painting on the eastern face of the building. See sample images below. Artists’ materials shall be reviewed for selection by a panel of community members and stakeholders. Artists should be prepared to work with community members, college students and stakeholders to facilitate the final design.
The selected artist will be announced on or before Monday 01 September 2008. Installation timeframe shall be determined by the selected artist in consultation with project stakeholders and community members. The selected artist shall be assisted by Rhodes College students and CODA staff in support roles.
Wall dimensions: 148.5 ft. long x 78.6 ft. tall
Area available for painting: 7,472 sq. ft. centered in the upper ¾ of the wall
Budget*: $70,000 including materials, equipment and artist fee.
*All preparatory work shall be completed prior to installation.
Deadline: Materials must be received no later than 5pm, Friday, August 0, 2008.

Guidelines
- Typed, one-page letter of interest.
- Current resume, not to exceed 2 pages.
- List of three professional references, including current telephone number and email contact information.
- CD-R with up to 10 digital color images of three to five previous projects, including budget figures, detailed description of media, dimensions, date and location of each work represented. Images should be JPEG format only, 1920 pixels maximum on the longest side, 72dpi, with compression settings resulting in the best image quality under 2MB file size. (This format is best suited for our projection purposes during proposal review.)
- Self-addressed, stamped envelope with postage sufficient for the return of materials. Materials will not be returned without self-addressed and stamped envelope.

- In fairness to all applicants, no waivers or extensions will be granted for any reason.
- Applicants will be notified by letter as to the status of their application.
Commissioning of artists by Rhodes College and the pursuit of all CODA activities are implemented without preference to racial or ethnic origins, gender, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, disability or age.
Rhodes College reserves the right to modify this solicitation and to request additional information or materials from any or all participating artists.
Rhodes College reserves the right to accept or reject, at any time prior to the commissioning of a work, any or all materials when the acceptance, rejection, waiver or advertisement would be in the best interest of the project. In addition, Rhodes College may solicit materials from artists not responding to this call and reserves the right to select an artist outside of the pool of artists responding to this call.
The staff of Rhodes College shall be responsible for all correspondence and communication by and between applicants and members of selection panels. Discussion regarding these projects by and between any applicant and any member of a selection panel outside of regularly scheduled meetings during the selection process may be grounds for the disqualification of the applicant. Such determination shall be in the sole discretion of Rhodes College.
