WS 460 Internship

A directed internship in which students integrate their academic study of gender issues with practical experience in off-campus organizations, agencies, or businesses.  The student and faculty mentor devise a reading list to complement the internship and submit it, along with an internship proposal, to the chair of the Women’s Studies Program for approval.  Student interns work a minimum of 10 hours per week, keep a journal which they discuss regularly with their faculty advisor, and present their internship experience either at the Women’s Studies symposium or at URCAS.  To be eligible, students must have a G.P.A. of 2.5 or higher.  F11

Students apply for internships through Career Services.

Current Internships Available:

YWCA Abused Women’s Services:  receive training to answer crisis calls, help with children, interact with women and provide support; may also assist with orders of protections, warrants, etc.

Planned Parenthood of Memphis:  following a training period, coordinate and implement a complete sexual health educations series with an applicable social service agency.

DeNeuville Learning Center: (non-profit educational and vocational facility for low income women) Assist with education, grant writing and preparation of students for job placement. Serve as project coordinators for special projects.
